Senior Soft-goods Designer

Inspiring better ways to carry is at the core of Bellroy's mission and we’re on the hunt for a senior soft-goods designer to design products that help our customers move through the world with greater ease, simplicity and enjoyment. We founded Carryology to connect with the carry community and learn from it. With Bellroy, we look to put those learnings into practice – and forge a new path in carry while we’re at it.

As a Senior Soft-goods Designer, you’ll work alongside five diversely skilled product designers, an incredible pattern-maker, product developers and frequent guest experts who are all passionate about carry, and Bellroy’s strong place within it. You’ll collaborate inside the business – with our creative, development and product management teams – and outside it, with our suppliers who also happen to be some of the world’s best. You’ll work through your ideas in our well-equipped lab, where we can pattern and prototype new wallets, bags and carry goods in a single day (and still manage to check the surf). You’ll lead projects and guide designs through our agile processes, crystallising the vision and improving the resolution as we go. And you’ll be part of a global business on a mission to lead the way – in both carry, and in business. If this sounds like the job of your dreams, read on.

You have experience in bag design, a passion for discovering compelling new solutions, and the drive to get these solutions to market.

You have several years under your belt as a soft-goods designer – you’ve definitely designed a few backpacks in your time, and have probably dabbled in footwear, technical outerwear and maybe even small leather goods. You’re imaginative, and you love exploring an idea. But you’re also very determined to get good designs out into the world. Fast. Because you don’t consider a design done until it’s in customers’ hands (or on their back), being used and loved like you knew it could be. You don’t let too much get in the way of that – and will push your work forward when accidental bureaucracy or confusion might otherwise slow things down for no good reason.

This enthusiasm and confidence makes you a good leader, and an even better collaborator. You look to the experts around you for feedback, insights and help in keeping things moving. Because it’s not ego that drives you; it’s seeing excellent products go out into the world. You embrace feedback, and enjoy the process of implementing that feedback to make designs even better.

Bellroy’s a great mix of art and science, rational and emotional. And so are you. We believe that good processes and the right kinds of constraints lead to great design, more often. And you are someone who gets a kick out of great process as much as you do great design. (Almost.) You’re someone who measures their success by progress, and if you’re not feeling it, you start looking for what’s wrong – so you can fix it.

If you’re methodical, practical and good at just getting stuff done, we’ll give you the tools you need to make that happen.

  • Worked on a new product brief, distilling the essence of a new bag design concept into a document that sets the tone for the development to come
  • Roughed out some prototypes to test the key elements of the concept, then jammed with the other designers to get candid and real feedback on where you’re at
  • Worked closely with Tara, our pattern-maker, to get the improved ideas into higher resolution sewn forms
  • Contributed to a few round tables on colleague’s designs, as they tried to solve the key unknowns in their project
  • Squeezed in a quick lunchtime surf to let some of your ideas percolate
  • Debriefed with our Customer Insights team about a design we’re about to update, seeking feedback on which elements have resonated, and which elements have confused our customers
  • Prepped for an upcoming supplier trip, making sure we have the right materials and sub-assemblies ready
  • Participated in a product show-back, where we share a new design with more of the company, seeking new perspectives before the final refinements are locked in
  • Collaborated with our Product Development team to ensure a design we’re readying for production can be made consistently and commercially, referencing both the BOM and production notes as it’s fine-tuned

  • Strong team player
  • Several years experience in a similar position
  • Strong project management skills
  • Excellent taste (if you have trouble predicting which products are more likely to succeed, you may be missing some vital frameworks)
  • An ability to assess whether a design is fit for purpose, uniting form and function
  • Growth Mindset, and the belief that ability is the result of hard work, not good genes

Bellroy’s mission is to inspire better ways to carry; use business as a force for good; and help the world – and our crew – flourish. We do good by making great products that delight people in their everyday lives; by innovating ways to help our staff love their work and grow as people; and by donating a portion of our revenue to some of the world’s most effective charities. We have a beautiful office space in Fitzroy (and another smaller one in Bells Beach), and we are constantly looking for better ways to do… well, everything. Want to help us?

This role is full-time and based in our Bells Beach office, with occasional (roughly quarterly) travel to our suppliers in Asia, and more frequent visits to our Fitzroy office.

Start Day: We're ready when you are!

Senior Soft-goods Designer

Inspire better ways to carry.
Use business as a force for good.
Help the world, and our crew, flourish.

Our Spaces

'Bellroy' is a fusion of our two homes – Bells Beach and Fitzroy. Bells Beach brings a relaxed, outdoor vibe to balance Fitzroy's creative, urban style. The city and the sea; inspiration and adventure. Together they provide a perfect balance.

Bells Beach

Our beach HQ sits behind giant sandstone cliffs that overlook one of Australia’s best-known surfing coastlines. It’s where our Product Designers experiment in the Maker Lab, and our Sales team consume awesome amounts of espresso and Skype bandwidth. Things are more tranquil here than our Fitzroy neighbours and we like the focus that can create. There’s a cafe right next door if you need a quick bite and our 11am surf check always provides the perfect chance to reset the mind with some salt air.

Our Fitzroy space is immersed in the middle of Melbourne’s creative hub. It’s where our Creative, Marketing, Engineering and Operations teams develop campaigns and ensure each Bellroy is sent safely across the world. Walk out the door and you’ll find streets bursting with energy (and the best ramen joint this side of Tokyo). There’s also an olympic-size pool just around the corner for those in need of a lunchtime refresh.

Outside of our two main headquarters we have a team that works remotely - from Western Australia to parts of Asia, the USA and Europe. Being global is at the heart of Bellroy, it keeps us connected, and makes sure we see life from many different perspectives. If you have an internet connection and the flexibility to become part of a team you don’t see everyday, you might consider joining our growing global network.
