FAQ's

Here's where we'll try to answer those questions that we've heard more than once. We've split them by category to try to make life easier, or you can use the search box in the top right of this page.

BELLROY

Q: Where is Bellroy based?

A: Ahhh, that's a tricky one. Many of our head office functions are in the south east of Australia (a small closed office at 2/2 Stuart Ave, Jan Juc, Vic), but we work with creatives all around the world.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: If you're a pretty original spirit, creative, and in love with the world of carry, then we'd love to hear from you. Send us an email, or better yet, drop some comments on Carryology and we'll be sure to notice.

Q: Why an owl?

A: Owls really seem like the true global citizen. They are on almost every continent, yet still adapt to each of the regions they are in. City or country, night or day, they're pretty cool creatures.

PRODUCT

Q: Where are Bellroy wallets made?

A: Our wallets are made in southern India, with the help of a family run company that we've formed a long and close relationship with. We have a group of dedicated craftsfolk there trained specially for the complexity of putting our wallets together (most of our wallets take around one hour to construct!). Our make room doesn't look like the stereotypical factory; it's in a bustling part of the city, with very clean and ordered spaces, a mostly female workforce (wearing beautiful saris), and even the occasional explosion of color at a small shrine dedicated to the particular Hindu festival they might be celebrating at the time. Our leathers are sourced and vegetable tanned locally, and then the wallets put together before being shared with customers around the world.

Q: Are Bellroy wallets the slimmest?

A: No. We do not have the slimmest wallets. If you want to wrap your cards in cling film, you can make a slimmer wallet. Instead, what we offer is a wallet that is as slim as we can get it without compromising on delightful interactions, considered materials, and comfort in everyday use. Oh, we also offer some tips to reduce the amount you put into your wallet. That should help too :)

Q: Are they all as slim as each other?

A: No. Within our range, some are slimmer than others. Essentially, the more features you want (e.g. access to lots of cards with equal priority), the more oomph you'll need to accommodate that. We try to give a selection of options, on a scale of slimness, and hope you'll find one that is as slim as it can be for your desired level of features.

Q: How many cards do the wallets fit?

A: For each Bellroy wallet, we try and give a range for which the wallet will perform well. You can probably fit more or less cards than that, but the wallet won't be running in its sweet spot of awesomeness.

Q: Do you make wallets with coin pockets?

A: In general, we don't think coins should be carried in your wallet. They add significant bulk, stretch the leather, and increase the chance of breaking your cards. Instead, try putting coins in the coin pocket of your jeans, in your car, or maybe even tip a little extra.

Having said all that, we recognise that some awesome folk still want coins in their wallet, and so we try to design that option in without it adding bulk when not used for coins (most of our coin pockets also work great for business cards, a key, or an important keep sake). We list coin capabilities in the wallet description, so check the wallets that you are interested in, and it should mention whether it takes coins.

Q: What other products do Bellroy plan on making?

A: Not T-shirts. Or caps. Or any of the other distractions that most brands are tempted into. Bellroy is about better carrying, and so you'll see us applying ourselves only to carry products.

Q: How will the wallet come packaged?

A: We have custom made cardboard cases that each wallet comes in (you can sneak a look on the Shipping page). Our courier then bags that, and ships it to you. Our packaging is made from recycled card, and kept slim and light weight.

Q: Can the magnets in the Take Out wallet scramble credit cards?

A: We spent a lot of time researching magnets before we added them to the Take Out wallet. Shows like Mythbusters decided it was a myth that magnets damaged cards, even using a gigantic car wrecker's magnet against a card. Our understanding is a little more nuanced than that...

Essentially, if a magnet is repeatedly passed over a hotel key card, it can scramble it. If a magnet is held right against a credit card strip, and rapidly repeatedly passed over it, it can eventually cause a slight scrambling of the information.

Neither of these things would happen with the placement of our magnets, and so it would take a very deliberate act to damage cards with them the way we place them. We have not had any customers, employees or friends using that wallet report it happening to them, despite lots of these wallets being used daily for several years now. We love that little delight you get when the magnets locate your wallet back in place, and believe you don't have to compromise for this daily delight.

Q: What pen refill do I need for the Travel Wallet pen?

A: We ship an extra pen refill with each Travel Wallet, but if you write lots (or have 7 middle names like one of our designers), then you can buy more refills online. Just search for a 'Pilot BRF-8F 0.7' and you'll get lots of options. Hope that helps!

Q: How should I care for my wallet?

A: We've written a post called 5 Tips for Leather Care, which you can find here. In summary, you shouldn't need to do anything other than use it and not overly abuse it. But it's nice to see some tips for if you do accidentally dish out excess abuse...

PURCHASING

Q: What currencies can I pay in?

A: We currently only accept payment in Australian and US Dollars.

CARRYOLOGY

Q: What's with the term ‘carry’?

A: Have you noticed how for years, shops and brands have been retailing bags, luggage and wallets together, without ever really having a name for the category? ‘Accessories’ is most often used, but we think ‘carry’ suits better, and so we're pleased to finally have a term for our obsessions.

Q: What is the relationship between Bellroy and Carryology?

A: We founded Carryology when we realized there was a lack of good information on how to carry better. But once it started, it has grown to be much broader than Bellroy. We now have a large family based around the globe, contributing and sharing ideas.

RETURNS

Q: How do I return a wallet?

A: First off, if something has gone wrong, we are really sorry. We pride ourselves on our quality, so have to really apologize if one has slipped through. Send us an email with the issue (pictures always help), and we'll get back to you ASAP with the next steps. Email us at support@bellroy.com

DELIVERY

Q: Can I get it shipped any faster?

A: We use a courier that is quite fast in their delivery times. However if you have stuffed up, forgotten your wife's birthday, and need a present in a crazy hurry, send us an email with your needs. We'll see if there's any options and get back to you quickly.

PRIVACY

Q: Can I trust you with my details?

A: While we properly outline all this in our Terms section, a quick answer is Yes. We need to give your delivery details to our courier, but other than that, they stay with us under lock and key.

TERMS OF TRADE

Q: Why are they so long?

A: We really wish we didn't have to do all that fine print palaver, but them's the rules. A quick summary for those not up for reading them all is: we're reasonable. We doubt you'll be disappointed doing business with us.

ENVIRONMENT

Q: Isn't there a better material than leather?

A: We haven't found anything better than leather. When treated in the right way, you get an organic material that lasts for years, maintains appeal for years, and remains flexible to your changing needs. Every alternative we have researched fails on at least one of these factors, and ends up having more total impact than the humble cow hide.

We do try to limit the impact of the leathers we source. We start by sourcing all our leathers from Indian hides. There are two advantages to this… a) Indian cows have thinner hides, so we can have slimmer wallets, and b) India is predominantly a Hindu country, which means cows are treated as sacred. Our Indian cows are also 'end of life' cows, which means they have lived full lives. When sourced this way, we think that the benefits of leather outweigh the drawbacks, and help give more wallet stoke.

LEATHER

Q: Are the brighter colours available?

A: While we often get the urge to release a really bright and poppy colorway, we are trying to restrain ourselves. Neon green and canary yellow provide a short burst of stoke, but we've found that most people tire of these pretty quickly (the fashion industry thinks of these as wardrobe flushes). We really want to make products that are used and loved for years, and so we try and pick more classic colors. If you really want us to do something brighter, get some friends together and start a petition. We might still be convinced!

Q: How should I care for my wallet?

A: Leather does not like moisture. If you can keep water away from it, your wallet should last yonks (that means a long time). Most people love the patina of use that a good vegetable tanned leather develops. We have created leathers that should ëbreak in' like a good pair of jeans, without any extra care required.

UPDATES

Q: How can I stay informed?

A: Sign up for some updates at the bottom of this (or any) page. We'll let you know of the important stuff, without bombarding you.
